Description
The Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” is a retired long-range, high-altitude, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft developed and manufactured by the American aerospace company Lockheed Corporation. The SR-71 was developed as a black project reconnaissance aircraft during the 1960s by Lockheed’s Skunk Works division, initially as a bomber variant of the Lockheed A-12 before the program focused solely on reconnaissance. In 1974, on two separate flights, the SR-71 set the record for highest sustained flight, and also the fastest flight time between London and New York. In 1976, it became the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, previously held by its predecessor, the closely related Lockheed YF-12. As of 2024, the “Blackbird” still holds all three world records.

Version 2
This version modifies the display stand to address some balance and weight distribution issues, and includes some replacement pieces and design, as follows:
- updates to a part error in the stand near the arches, replacing a 1x2x3 brick with (1) 1×2 brick and (2) 1×2 plates
- moves the stand placement back towards the tail 2 by 2 studs, and extends the stand rest by an additional 2 studs
- replaces the rear wheel ‘cover’ with a stand-embedded inverted slope to simplify and strengthen the connection
- replaces two interior 2×3 modified bricks with hole (that the previous wheel ‘cover’ slotted into) with 3×3 plates with cutout (heart plates) to maintain positioning of the ‘rest’ on the stand
