The Vought F4U Corsair is an American fighter aircraft that saw service primarily in World War II and the Korean War. Designed and initially manufactured by Chance Vought, the Corsair was soon in great demand; additional production contracts were given to Goodyear, whose Corsairs were designated FG, and Brewster, designated F3A. The Corsair was designed and operated as a carrier-based aircraft, and entered service in large numbers with the U.S. Navy in late 1944 and early 1945. The aircraft is, in this designer’s opinion, the most visually striking and thus recognizable planes, and was a fantastic challenge to model in LEGO.
Overall Design Features
Drawing inspiration from all corners of the LEGO world, I humbly present my rendition of the Vought F4U-4 Corsair. Featuring:
- accurate styling and proportions to that of the F4U-4 variation (there are so many!)
- folding front and rear landing gear that fold flush into the body
- wing-tip and tail lights
- fully-modeled radial engine with removable cowling, including additional engine compartments (compressor and fuel tank sections)
- internal cockpit with flight controls
- folding wings for hanger storage
- brick-built wing missiles and external fuel tanks
- fully-integrated wing intake vents and machine guns
- adjustable rear vertical and horizontal stabilizers on the empennage (rear tail assembly)
- rotating front rotor
- nearly-studless design
- built to LEGO design standards using standard connections and parts placement to ensure a strong model perfect for display
- utilizes only currently-available color pieces (although I’d love much more dark blue options!)
Focus was given to accuracy, strength and playability, and with quick-to-market and available colors. The product includes a full-color encrypted PDF of the digital model and importable XML parts list (in txt format). No bricks are included, but can be acquired from LEGO directly or other sources such as bricklink.com or similar. Decals are for display purposes only; no stickers are included.
Updates
Version 4
This version completely redesigned the interior engine compartment, re-modeling the engine to a more accurate and aesthetically-pleasing radial engine, along with detailed compressor and fuel tank areas all under an expanded removable cowling. The tail was also redesigned for strength and visual acuity, moving it closer to the sloped segment for a cleaner look. Finally, the wings were updated to reinforce the middle segment, revising the guns from two 1×1 plates with bar to a 1×2 plate with 3 teeth (which more accurately depicts the 3 guns) and revising the folding landing gear and storage to be stronger and cleaner in appearance. Also included in this version is a completely redesigned display stand that showcases the plane in a better light, angle and focus and no longer distracts from the visual of the plane in flight. Finally, newly-designed armaments now adorn each wing and two external fuel tanks were also added. Other various piece adjustments were also made throughout to strengthen or refine the design for easier build and stability.
Version 3
Newly added stand included in the instructions! Feature the Corsair in flying formation with the addition of an elegant studless stand. Other adjustments include a refined part usage and color scheme to aid in instructions (interior colors were changed to black to help differentiate from the LBG exterior), and adjustments to the instructions to correct a few placement and process gaps identified.
Version 2
Featuring increased strength in the wing segments and increased rigidity in the fuselage. The folding wheel door mechanism was sacrificed for these improvements, but was a necessary trade off to ensure successful and long-term playability without frustration.

This is an EXCELLENT rendition of this aircraft in LEGO! I’ve built this model but made some edits to change it into the US-Korean war livery. I also designed replacement side panels to replace the hard-to-find LEGO part 45301 in “earth” (i.e., dark) blue, to better display the profile when adding stickers/decals to this build.

Version 3 is nearly flawless (it was tricky to get the engine in). This is the best scale of Corsair out there. Perfectly captures the F4U1-C variant. You’ll have a great time building the model, great building techniques!
